The original tutorial used a sort of twine, but I didn't have anything like that so instead I used embroidery thread, which worked just as well. I picked it up ages ago when I was making a Halloween costume and must have got around 10 bundles for £1. I used 5 of the colours and didn't even use up the whole bit, so this is also an extremely cheap DIY. These would make such great gifts, but you'll have to either buy some earphones or try and steal the other persons for a little while! Pretend they lost them, everyone has a spare, right? And then when you turn up with these beauties all will be forgotten!
Like I said, these are really simple, but they can be slightly confusing to understand to begin with. I'm hoping my pictures help!
Firstly, tie the thread around the earphone cord. Make sure it's right at the top. Leave a small tail of thread and make sure this is kept parallel with the earphone cord as it will be covered up by the thread.
Feed the thread under the earphone cord, like above.
Then, take the thread over the top of the earphone cord and feed it through the hole that was created.
Pull the thread through so the circle gets smaller. To begin with, make sure the circle of thread goes over the tail that you left. This will secure the thread and ensure it doesn't unravel from the top. Pull all the way through until it is tight.
Continue to repeat the process and the thread will naturally swivel around the earphone cord. Be sure to keep turning the cord so that you always put the thread under the cord to begin with.
I put a couple of colours next to each other on the same bit of earphone cord and the process is really simple. Once you've finished with one colour, tie the end of the thread around the cord a few times and cut off the excess thread. Again, leave a small tail that will be covered by the thread.
Get your new thread and tie it right at the bottom of the part you have just finished. Leave a tail on this thread to be covered as you tie.
Then begin the process again with the new thread keeping both of the tails parallel to the cord so it is covered as you tie.
Once you have got to the end of the cord, you need to make sure the thread won't come undone. To do this, tie the thread around the cord. To be super safe I did this a few times, but just be sure that the ties do not bulge making it look thicker at the end. Once tied, wrap the thread around the end a few times and then fix with a bit of glue. Super glue works best and will ensure it won't come undone.
Once you get into it, it's actually a very simple process. It is a little time consuming, but I really think it's worth it! I like my apple earphones, but they are pretty dull so now they look good and it also stops them tangling while in my bag, bonus!
Hope you enjoy this one. Share your own experiences below!
This is such a cool idea, I've never seen this before! Definitely going to give it a go :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Sarah! I thought so too, I couldn't wait to try! And you can always change the colours by unravelling the thread too! Please come back and share once you've tried it out :) x
